MAYOR'S MESSAGE 10 April 2019

Nominations are now open for representatives of local organisations/clubs in the greater Port Sorell area to join the Port Sorell Advisory Committee (PSAC).  The Port Sorell Advisory Committee (PSAC) is a special committee of the Latrobe Council and is currently undertaking its bi-annual nomination process.  The role of members is to consider and make recommendations to the Council on matters relating to the good development of the Port Sorell, Hawley and Shearwater areas and to assist with marketing, promotion and development of these areas.

Primarily, the committee consists of a wide cross section of the Port Sorell community with representatives from various clubs and community groups as well as interested community minded individuals.  Representation on the committee is voluntary and runs for a two year period. The committee meetings are held at the Banksia Centre, Port Sorell from 4.00pm to 5.00pm on a Tuesday once a month (with the exception of December and January).  For further information including nomination forms, terms of reference and a full list of positions available, please contact Council’s Executive Assistant, Sarah Cairns, on 6426 4444 or email

Do you have any old phones just sitting around the home gathering dust?  Why not drop them in to the collection box at the Latrobe Council office, 170 Gilbert Street, Latrobe.  For some time now, Latrobe Council has worked with MobileMuster to encourage the recycling of mobile phones and accessories.  MobileMuster partner with nearly 400 councils throughout Australia and, over the past 12 years, have collected over 42 tonnes of mobile phone components, which equates to approximately 570,000 handsets and batteries. Through MobileMuster the collected items are manufactured in to new products, which otherwise would have ended up in landfill.

MAYORS MESSAGE 27 March 2019

Council recently welcomed a funding announcement by Nationals Senator Steve Martin and his coalition Government colleagues Senators Richard Colbeck and Eric Abetz along with Senate candidate Tanya Denison and Braddon Liberal candidate Gavin Pearce.  It is highly pleasing that the funding, consisting of $230,000 for the redevelopment of the Port Sorell Surf Life Saving Club and $4 million for the Camp Banksia upgrade and expansion project, is not dependent on the outcome of the yet to be announced Federal election.  The funding allocation will certainly support the ongoing development of the Port Sorell Surf Life Saving Club and assist the club in the provision of their highly valued and important service to the community.  Additionally, the Camp Banksia upgrade and expansion will greatly assist to deliver a multi-faceted facility that will meet current and future community needs and expectations.

Council has, for a number of years, coordinated a ‘Community Seat Dedication’ program.  This initiative provides individuals, families, clubs, businesses and service groups with the opportunity to purchase an engraved seat to be located in an appropriate site in the municipality.  The seat engraving may be ‘sponsored by’, ‘donated by’, ‘in memory of’ or any other lead in as considered appropriate by Council.  A complete set of guidelines and applications forms are available from Council’s website or from the Council Office.

A reminder to residents and visitors to be mindful of the major upgrade works currently underway at Perkins Park in Latrobe.  The upgrades will include the installation of lighting towers, re-orientation of the concrete wicket and repairs to the playing surface. New goal posts and barrier fencing will address risk issues and also assist in meeting the needs of increasing participation in both football and cricket of local girls and boys. Works will be undertaken in a number of stages over the next 6 months.
