Australian Axeman's Hall of Fame Revamp

6 September 2016

The Mayor of Latrobe, Councillor Peter Freshney has advised that plans are underway to revamp the Australian Axeman’s Hall of Fame facility situated at the picturesque Bell’s Parade Latrobe. The changes at the venue are aimed at ensuring the long term viability of the complex and maintaining its role as a key attraction for visitors and locals alike.

In a key component of the changes, Latrobe’s Australian Championship winning Federal Band will relocate to the facility. The Band is the oldest continuously serving brass band in Australia and was established in 1872. The current band rooms located at the Latrobe Recreation Ground are in need of a major upgrade estimated to cost approximately $400,000.

Mayor Freshney said the relocation of the band to modern premises will be a good fit with the Axeman’s facility and Bells Parade precinct and he is hopeful that more community events involving the band can be held as a result of the move.

The area under the grand stand currently used by the band will be converted to a storage area which is a high priority for other clubs using the Latrobe Recreation Ground complex.

The Australian Axeman’s Hall of Fame memorabilia is in need of revitalisation and the exhibition will be refined and placed strategically within the main hall complex in the area currently used by the Latrobe Visitor Centre.

Mayor Freshney said: “The Latrobe Visitor Centre will relocate to the Cherry Shed for an initial trial period of twelve months. The Cherry Shed is located at one entrance to Latrobe and is a major visitor destination and will provide an ideal opportunity for the volunteers at the centre to encourage visitors to visit other attractions within the area.”

“The Australian Axeman’s Hall of Fame is an outstanding asset for both the Latrobe community and the surrounding region and is an ideal venue for large gatherings, weddings and other major functions”, Mayor Freshney stated.

The Council is committed to the future operation of the Australian Axeman’s Hall of Fame facility and has recently called for expressions of interest for a new operator. The expressions of interest close this Friday 9th September 2016. The Council is looking for an operator that can build on the success of the Sunday market, operate the café and cater for the functions several of which have been booked over the next few weeks.
