PORT SORELL LIONS CLUB CARAVAN PARK

The Acting Mayor of Latrobe Council, Cr Rick Rockliff, has emphasised that the decision by Council at the Closed Meeting held on the 14th December 2015 to resume management of the Port Sorell Caravan Park as from 1stJuly 2017 was not taken lightly.

Acting Mayor Rockliff advised that for all intents and purposes, customers of the Port Sorell Caravan Park will not notice any difference with the proposed changeover. The day to day management of the park remains with the current Caretakers, Trevor and Faye Eaves, with sites continuing to be booked via the on-site office in Meredith Street, Port Sorell or by phoning 6428 7267.

Acting Mayor Rockliff also categorically confirms that Council has no intention of selling off the Port Sorell Caravan Park.

Acting Mayor Rockliff stated that, "There have been many issues associated with management of the park over the last several years particularly relating to erection of illegal structures and transfer of sites to new owners where the structures were not in compliance with agreements made between Council and the Lions Club in 2008."

The decision taken also took into account the ever increasing responsibilities relating to park management including the need for robust, long-term financial and asset management plans, compliance requirements including workplace health and safety and management of the contractor, amongst others. Acting Mayor Rockliff noted that the decision was made with the best interests of all stakeholders as a priority.

He advised that Council had written to the Port Sorell Lions Club after the decision was taken advising that the current three way agreement between the Latrobe Council, the Lions Club of Port Sorell, and the Caretakers is very cumbersome and had contributed to many of the issues that had arisen. Council also believed that several of these issues related to the non-transfer of intellectual knowledge relating to the management of the park between successive Lions Club committees and management personnel.

Council acknowledged the significant contribution that the Lions Club has made towards the operation of the park over many years and the excellent work that is done within the Port Sorell community via the distribution of funds that the Lions Club receives from management fees.

On 29th January 2016 the Secretary of the Lions Club acknowledged receipt of Council’s letter dated 17thDecember 2015 and advised that they looked forward to working with Council over the next eighteen months.

Acting Mayor Rockliff advised that the Council was in the final stages of negotiating an agreement with the Lions Club which detailed future involvement in the park including being reimbursed for five working bees at the park including up to ten participants, permit the club to conduct fundraising barbecues, pancake sales and other fundraising activities within the park grounds, exclusive rights to operate a gas bottle exchange service within the park and retain associated income, and erect a sign at the camp kitchen to acknowledge the club’s contribution to the maintenance and management of the park and to rename the structure the ‘Lions Club Camp Kitchen’.

Council has also agreed to remit the site fees for the six cabins (estimated value $16,000) which the Lions Club own and are located within the park.

"The Council has agreed to meet with the Lions Club in May to further discuss their issues of concern", Acting Mayor Rockliff said.
