Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree

Latrobe Council has truly gotten in to the spirit of Christmas, this year decorating the Christmas tree at the Bass Highway/Gilbert Street junction with Christmas lights ...

The collection of green holographic and red baubled Christmas trees adorning the street poles along Gilbert Street, Latrobe have been added to this year, bringing joy to motorists as they travel along the Bass Highway, in to the town of Latrobe.
Following the receipt of approval from the Department of State Growth, Latrobe Council has lit up the tree at the Gilbert Street/Bass Highway intersection, alongside The Cherry Shed.
Council’s Manager Infrastructure and Assets, Mr Jonathan Magor, advised that “the lights are powered by solar charged batteries and are currently lit each evening from 8.00pm until midnight.
As with any new installation there have been a few teething problems but they have now been ironed out and the lit tree is being well received by those driving past it.”
Mayor Peter Freshney said, “this proposal was initially suggested by former Deputy Mayor Rick Rockliff and we are grateful that the Department of State Growth has permitted the installation.
The lighting does not flash on and off, so as not to distract motorists as we certainly don’t want the lights to cause any accidents.
The lighting will remain in place throughout the year and is of such a design that we are able to set the lights to a specific colour to highlight special occasions such as red and blue in the lead up to Australia Day, purple for Epilepsy month and so on.
In having this ability, Council seeks to draw attention to various occasions and causes throughout the year although we are still wanting it to be something special at Christmas time.”
