The Tasmanian Youth Government Association (TYGA) is an apolitical, youth-led organisation aiming to provide young Tasmanians with a forum for their ideas, concerns and expectations about their government.

Each year TYGA coordinates the Tasmanian Youth Parliament and this year they are running Tasmanian Youth Local Government. This program aims to facilitate a forum for young Tasmanians specifically in the area of issues surrounding Local Government.

TYGA also aims to allow young people to develop confidence through public speaking, interpersonal, analytical and teamwork skills.

As well as providing awareness amongst young people of the issues and processes of local government, TYGA aims to provide governing bodies with documents that express the considered view of young people on a range of issues.

The Tasmanian Youth Government Association is committed to the youth of Tasmania and providing them the tools and skills in order to be heard in the community.

Nominees from each region will come together with representatives from around the state to debate social and development issues whilst gaining worthwhile experience in community consultation.

The program will focus on the power of grassroots advocacy, combining workshops, speakers’ panels, and group discussions to provide a rewarding and welcoming environment for young councillors to discuss what is most important to them.

Participants of this program will produce submissions and project proposals, which will be presented to Local Government Councillors at the program’s conclusion, with the hopes that some of these proposals may be adopted by local governments throughout our state.

The conference is in two parts.

A North West Round on Sunday, 1 October.  This day will run from 9am to 4.30pm. Morning and afternoon tea will be provided, students will be required to bring their own lunch.

Latrobe Council will fund transport to the North-West Round if located outside the Latrobe Municipality.  This may be in the form of a fuel voucher to the participants transport provider.

A Residential Weekend in Hobart on the weekend of 14-15 October.  This will invovle developing the ideas and concepts identified as vital to youth on a Local Government level however, this weekend will not be purely business. This weekend will include social activities that will allow participants to meet like-minded students from across the state.

Latrobe Council is supportive of local youth involvement and is offering to sponsor two individuals from Grade 9 or 10 that live in the Latrobe Municipality, to attend and participate in this opportunity.
