Port Sorell Old Landfill Rehabilitation Project

Port Sorell Old Landfill rehabilitation project

Rehabilitation of the Port Sorell old landfill site at the corner of Hawk Hill Road and Alexander Street, Shearwater is progressing, with detailed environmental testing of air, water and soil now underway around the site.

Council is working closely with environmental scientists, engineers and the Environment Protection Authority Tasmania on the investigation.

Environmental scientists will be taking samples at various locations around the Waste Transfer Station, particularly on the site boundary and also along Poyston Creek. A map of the proposed test locations around the Waste Transfer Station can be seen here. Map proposed Test Locations(667 kb)

In some cases, a small drill rig will be used to extract soil and reach the underlying water table.

The Waste Transfer Station remains open.  Measures will be in place to minimise risks during these tests, including erection of additional fencing, surface water diversion, and monitoring of air, soil and water conditions.

Signs are also being erected around the site and along Poyston Creek advising of the testing and local precautions.

At the Waste Transfer Station, please observe:

  • No smoking
  • Beware of all equipment and vehicles
  • Avoid site areas restricted by fences or other barriers
  • Access only during Waste Transfer Station opening hours by main entry in Hawk Hill Road
  • Follow instructions of Council staff and environmental scientists at all times when on site.

Along Poyston Creek, as a precaution please observe:

  • No swimming or water activities
  • No drinking the creek water
  • No eating fish or shellfish from the creek
  • Do not use water on vegetables, fruit trees or residential lawns.

Residents with bore water sources in the vicinity of the old landfill site are asked to contact Council to arrange free testing of the water quality.  As a precaution until test results are known, it is recommended to not drink bore water and avoid using bore water to water vegetable gardens and fruit trees.
